Procrastinate With Me

10 Oct 2011

I used to think I handled stress well.

I guess I’ve lost that talent.  Or this kind of stress is just a whole new variety that I am ill-prepared to deal with.

Yes, I am talking about decisions regarding my trajectory through grad school & research.

Including: will my current lab remain my thesis lab, as it typically should?

Let’s make a pro/con list for “yes”:

Pros:

  • I already know my way around this lab/how it works.
  • I like the people.
  • I get along with my PI.

Cons:

  • I hate the research; it bores me.
  • For this reason, I am super unproductive.

Now let’s make a pro/con list for “no”:

Pros:

  • If I ditched this lab I could potentially get involved in a lab that matches my interests.
  • I might get a lot more out of my Ph.D. by researching something I enjoy.

Cons:

  • I would feel guilty leaving these awesome people.
  • I would need to “start over” and learn my way around a new lab.
  • My graduation could potentially be set back by more than a year.

Happy medium answer(?): Start a project in my current lab that employs skills I prefer to use.  At least I’ll half want to come into lab?  Maybe?
