Laughing To Keep From Crying of the Day: After a day rife with talk show appearances, Gov. Rick Perry poked fun at his now-infamous debate gaffe on last night’s Late Show by reciting a list of his “Top Ten Excuses.”
Between Herman Cain’s campaign ads disguised as sexual harassment denials and Rick Perry’s whirlwind media tour, it’s getting to the point where Republican...
Chocolate Chip Cookie Experiment
Introduction:
Whenever I make chocolate chip cookies lately they come out weird: super flat and burned around the edges, yet uncooked in the middle. I didn’t know whether it was me or my oven.
Methods:
Purchased a package of pre-made chocolate chip cookie dough squares (Nestle Toll House).
Put dough through rigorous quality check to make sure taste of batter was acceptable.

Ok, California is about to blow up.
That was the second earthquake centered in Berkeley today. Magnitude 4.2 (first one was 4.0).

I used to think I handled stress well.
I guess I’ve lost that talent. Or this kind of stress is just a whole new variety that I am ill-prepared to deal with.
Yes, I am talking about decisions regarding my trajectory through grad school & research.
Including: will my current lab remain my thesis lab, as it typically should?
Let’s make a pro/con list for “yes”:
Pros:
I already know my way around this...

Rant.
You know that neuroscience lab technique, “patch-clamping?” It sucks.
Patching neurons under terrible illumination conditions where you’re basically blind, sucks.
Figuring out how to image calcium florescence in dendrites all by yourself, because no one else is currently doing it in the lab (or at your university for that matter), sucks.
Having crises every other week because...

Someone please grade me?
I signed up for microscope time today, but couldn’t bring myself to actually go to lab. Today is Sunday. If this were undergrad, I would’ve gone in and used that time. Why was I so much more motivated back then?

Oh, Berkeley.
Let me list some of the random things I’ve seen in this crazy town thus far (independent of any festivals, or other obvious explanations):
- A unicyclist dressed in a loose rainbow onesie, playing the recorder.
- An old VW bug painted to look like clouds, parked outside a house painted to look like clouds.
- A house that looks like a fish/sea creature. Really.
- Obama’s face...

I figured this would happen soon-ish. The lone fact that this is possible is the reason I love neuroscience… and engineering. :)

Another reason this show is the best. I’m not ashamed - when I get home from work early and there’s an episode scheduled that I haven’t seen yet, I enthusiastically put on Nickelodeon!

Experiment!
Do I really need my own personal computer in lab everyday? (I would otherwise need to use one of two communal computers in lab to access things like the interwebs).
Hypothesis: Bringing my computer to work every day hiders my overall productivity there.
Methods: For 1 whole week, leave my computer at home when I go to work. Keep normal lab hours that week. Determine how productive...
